RO&AD’s recently completed sunken bridge (which isn’t faring too well, for what it’s worth) reminded me of Richard Wilson’s 20:50 installation at the Saatchi Gallery in London. Two rooms in the gallery are filled with thousands of gallons of recycled sump oil to waist height. Visitors travel through the pools via sunken steel pathways; the density and finish of the oil perfectly mirrors the ceiling, placing one in the middle of a reflective horizon line. This effect coupled with the overwhelming smell of the oil creates a dramatic sensory experience.
